Mauricio Pochettino agrees deal to stay as US coach through World Cup 2030

Pochettino joined US national team in 2024 Coach led US to last 16 at 2026 World Cup US men’s national team head coach Mauricio Pochettino and the US Soccer Federation have agreed to a contract extension that will keep Pochettino attached to the program through 2030, US Soccer announced on Monday. The two sides had been actively engaged in discussions on a contract extension for several months, long before the USMNT’s disappointing, last-16 exit in this summer’s World Cup, with the federation making it clear it desired Pochettino to stay. Conversations picked up in the weeks following the World Cup, with the Guardian reporting last week that the sides had been in the “final stages” of agreeing to a deal. Financial details of the contract extension were not released, but Pochettino is expected to get a raise on top of the $6m per year he earned under his previous deal with the federation – already the largest outlay for a US head coach. Football transfer rumours: Atlético to offer Grealish escape route? Spurs target Osimhen and Gakpo?

Today’s rumours are at a pintxo bar Jack Grealish needs a route out of Manchester City and could be offered one by Atlético Madrid. Everton, where he spent last season on loan, and first club Aston Villa are also lurking as the winger recovers from injury. The 30-year-old is absent from City’s pre-season tour and his future at the Etihad Stadium does not have a positive outlook, even after Enzo Maresca replaced Pep Guardiola. Tottenham’s attempts to add some more attacking power has caused them to enquire about Galatasaray’s Victor Osimhen and Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo , not that either would come cheaply. One imminent outgoing is the youngster Mikey Moore who is closing on a loan move to Cologne. Continue reading...

On the spot: 50 of the most famous – and infamous – Panenka penalties of all time

The 50th anniversary is the perfect time to remember 50 of the most famous – and infamous – attempts at the Czech’s chip It is 50 years since Antonin Panenka won the European Championship for Czechoslovakia with the most audacious penalty ever taken. His signature chip wasn’t instantly eponymous. A search of the British newspaper archives shows that it was barely mentioned until Francesco Totti dusted it off for the internet generation at Euro 2000. It was at least another decade before Panenka was commonly used as a noun, and it did not have its own Wikipedia page until 2014, but in 2026 every football fan has an idea of what it means. The 50th anniversary is the perfect time to remember 50 of the most famous – and infamous – attempts. Continue reading...

Socceroos on the move: Herrington headlines post-World Cup transfers

The defender is set to become one of Australia’s most expensive players with a Premier League deal nearly done while some international teammates have already made moves Lucas Herrington, fresh off becoming the youngest Australian to start a game at a men’s World Cup, is set to become the second-most expensive footballer in Australian history with a move to newly-promoted Premier League side Hull City. Latest reports suggest a fee of approximately £12.6m ($24.1m), with a further £4.4m ($8.4m) in add-ons, which comes in just shy of the Australian record of £15m plus £5m in add-ons ($38.3m in total) that Leicester paid Stoke City to sign Harry Souttar in 2023. It would set a new selling high-water mark for his current club, Colorado Rapids, and eclipses the decade-old record Hull set when they paid just over £10m for Ryan Mason. Given the trajectory of Herrington’s meteoric rise, it feels a pretty safe bet to assume the 18-year-old will claim Souttar’s record outright sooner rather than later. Continue reading...
