US players insist momentum remains with them despite late loss to Turkey

The US were on the verge of an encouraging draw in a meaningless game, but they insist that losing to Turkey changes nothing about what’s to come Throughout the week preceding the United States’ final group game, the matchup with Turkey was discussed as something of a formality. The new World Cup format made it impossible to begin speculation on a possible opponent until the third wave of matches kicked off on Wednesday, but the co-hosts’ place in the round of 32 was already secure. There were ample questions about how much Mauricio Pochettino would (and should) rotate. Christian Pulisic’s every movement, including whether or not he was donning a sleeve on his calf, was closely scrutinized. The atmosphere around training was light and jovial, a rare “eye of the hurricane” moment where the intensity seemed to wane and positivity permeated every corner of the team’s camp in Irvine. USA suffer late defeat to Turkey but eye Bosnia and Herzegovina in World Cup knockout stage

The US men’s national team have already made history this summer. They scored the most goals they ever have in a single World Cup game, won two straight games in the tournament for the first time in the modern era, and wrapped up top spot in an evenly-matched Group D with a game to spare. On Thursday evening they faced a far more familiar foe: World Cup adversity. And in the key moments – the kind of spots where knockout games are won and lost – they wilted. Kaan Ayhan’s goal with the last kick of the game sealed a 3-2 win for Turkey, giving their disastrous tournament a positive ending. It also means the Americans go into last 32 – where they will play Bosnia and Herzegovina – with fresh questions. Continue reading...

Socceroos secure place in World Cup last 32 after nerve-shredding draw with Paraguay

It was not a match of high distinction, but all the Socceroos needed was a pass against Paraguay, and their 0-0 draw in San Francisco Bay Area stadium booked a place in the World Cup knockout phase for the third time in their history. A much-changed Australia side controlled large parts of the match, but with both teams knowing that a draw would be enough to qualify for the last 32, there were long stretches without impetus. Bosnia and Herzegovina book place in knockout stage after seeing off Qatar

Bosnia and Herzegovina always knew boosting their goals-scored column would enhance their chances of advancing to the knockout stage for the first time. It was no wonder, then, that thousands of their supporters went berserk when Ermin Mahmic added a potentially crucial third goal in a victory that eliminated Qatar. The goal of the game undoubtedly belonged to the exciting 18-year-old Kerim Alajbegovic, but Mahmic’s sealed the win, third in Group B and a probable last-32 date with the USA in Santa Clara, at the home of the San Francisco 49ers. There were jubilant scenes at the final whistle. Sead Kolasinac, one of only two players from their last World Cup appearance in 2014, clenched his fists as the other, Edin Dzeko, after his 150th cap, embraced staff, bear hugs the order of the day. Mahmic, a 21-year-old who until May was still an Austrian youth international, was in tears. It was the same in the stands, where one supporter held aloft his blue-and-yellow scarf, lips quivering, before a victory lap ensued. There was a squad photo and then both fans and players bounced in unison. The sound over the speakers? The Bosnian rock band Dubioza Kolektiv’s track USA, of course. Continue reading...

Fidalgo caps Mexico rout as co-hosts maintain 100% record and send Czechia out

There are ways of leaving a tournament. You can go out with a sheen of glory, having gone toe-to-toe with a great opponent. You can be unlucky and go home raging at referees and the fates. You can self‑immolate in a blaze of red cards or own goals or spectacular errors. Or you can slink away without leaving a trace – and that was the path followed by Czechia. Nobody in 20 years will remember they were involved in this World Cup, other perhaps than Ireland fans reflecting on what a mess Czechia made of the place they pinched from them in the playoffs.
