The 2026 World Cup is over, but the onslaught of soccer relentlessly rolls on | Leander Schaerlaeckens

The supply of soccer seems to be enormously exceeding demand. It’s made the sport feel utterly overwhelming On Friday, the Scottish Premiership kicks off its 2026-27 season. The following Friday, the Dutch Eredivisie begins anew, and England’s Carabao Cup sets off on its ponderous journey. The various European club competitions have already begun their qualifying rounds – and did so on 7 July, in the case of the Champions and Conference Leagues. Liga MX is two rounds into its Apertura season; Major League Soccer resumed its regular season on 16 July. Other soccer is available elsewhere and at other times. It has been only a week since the World Cup ended. This is an extract from Soccer with Jonathan Wilson, a weekly look from the Guardian US at the game in Europe and beyond, helmed this week by Leander in Jonathan’s absence. Subscribe for free here . Have a question for Jonathan? Email soccerwithjw@theguardian.com , and he’ll answer the best in a future edition. Leander Schaerlaeckens is a Guardian US contributor whose book on the US men’s national soccer team, The Long Game, is out now. You can buy it here . He teaches at Marist University. Why Tottenham Women have provided distraction from the gloom of watching men’s team | Mark Burton

A growing connection with fans has helped make the women’s team by far the most enjoyable part of supporting Spurs The exciting football played by Tottenham’s women last season provided a much-needed antidote to the dreadful men’s team, who not only flirted with relegation, but took it out on a dinner date, looked deep into its eyes and started to plan a future together. Fortunately, that relationship fizzled out and fans were able to “celebrate” at the end of the season as Premier League status was secured. Meanwhile, Spurs achieved their highest points tally in the Women’s Super League. Highlights included a 7-2 goal‑fest against Aston Villa, a mind-bending FA Cup penalty shootout win against London City Lionesses (where the first 17 penalties were successfully slotted home) and a stream of wonder goals including a 40-yard screamer from Cathinka Tandberg. From Haaland love to Mexico’s Merlin: 26 memories from the 2026 World Cup

Norway’s striker left his mark, as did Scotland’s fans in Boston, but Turkey’s dark horses fell at the first hurdle “I played with him on my PlayStation, and now I’ve scored against him,” Livano Comenencia said after converting Curaçao’s first World Cup goal past Manuel Neuer in their opening match against Germany. The smallest nation ever to qualify for the World Cup went on to lose 7-1 but that goal – their only one of the tournament – will go down in history. Continue reading...
