Aston Villa’s Rachel Daly: ‘It’s given me more of a focus: club football is my one job’

Former England striker on retiring from the Lionesses, being a role model, and taking on Chelsea in the WSL A year after taking up golf, Rachel Daly has already reached a handicap of 19. “I think that’s too generous, I was playing really well in the summer,” she point outs before politely declaring that further questions about her pastimes are out of bounds. “I’m not that exciting, to be honest,” Daly says. “I walk the dogs, play golf. I don’t do a whole lot. I don’t lead a very exciting life.” Instead, Daly wants to talk about the new Women’s Super League season, which is more than fair enough. Coincidentally, by next summer, 19 will be the number of seasons Daly has played at the top level, ever since breaking into Leeds’ first team as a 16-year-old in 2008, and therefore it feels reasonable to disagree with her view that a former Olympian, who played 84 times for England and was the WSL’s player of the season only three years ago, does not lead an exciting life. Yet there is another number on Daly’s mind as she discusses her role as Aston Villa’s captain. Continue reading...

Crystal Palace agree Disasi loan and tell Manchester City that Wharton is not for sale

Centre-back to join from Chelsea after Acheampong snub Wharton has three years left on current deal at Palace Crystal Palace have agreed a deal with Chelsea to sign Axel Disasi on loan and are expecting further interest in some of their key players in the final week of the transfer window, having informed Manchester City that Adam Wharton is not for sale. Palace have been searching for a replacement for Maxence Lacroix after selling the France defender to Chelsea and are also understood to have approached Xabi Alonso’s side over a potential move for Josh Acheampong. But with Chelsea not willing to allow the England Under-21s international to leave Stamford Bridge, Palace have opted to bring in Disasi instead. The 28-year-old, who spent the second half of last season on loan at West Ham, is set to complete his medical on Friday. Continue reading...

Manchester United’s midfield rebuild leaves Carrick with no excuses

Signings of Tielemans and Santos have addressed an area that has been problematic since the manager himself stopped playing Ed Woodward to MUTV in July 2015: “When people see Bastian Schweinsteiger on the team sheet, that’s going to send some shivers down the spine.” This prediction by Manchester United’s then executive vice-president, about Louis van Gaal’s new midfield signing, proved to be badly off‑target as the World Cup-winner’s career at the club proved to be a disappointment. Two years after Woodward’s bullish statement, Schweinsteiger departed for Chicago Fire with a paltry 35 appearances and two goals for United on his CV, having been forced to train for a while with the youngsters by José Mourinho, Van Gaal’s successor. Here, in microcosm, is the story of virtually all midfield recruits by United for a generation. The hope at the club is that this trend changed this summer, with the arrivals of Youri Tielemans for £35m from Aston Villa and Andrey Santos for £48m plus £2m in add-ons from Chelsea, with the manager, Michael Carrick, also closing in on Brighton’s Carlos Baleba. Jovial Jakirovic determined to haul Hull over and beyond Coles’ relegation jibes

Club ‘not here by accident’ and revamped squad return to Premier League against Manchester United on Saturday On a baking spring bank holiday, Sergej Jakirovic basked in the glory of Hull’s fairytale promotion to the Premier League in an address to 40,000 ecstatic supporters from the balcony of Hull City Hall. “I only had one task before the season – to stay in the Championship … I failed. We’re going to the Premier League!” roared Jakirovic to the delight of those in attendance. Oli McBurnie’s late goal had secured a 1-0 win over Middlesbrough in the Championship playoff final 48 hours earlier, clinching one of the unlikeliest ascents for years. Hull survived relegation to League One only on goal difference in 2024-25 but Jakirovic, an intriguing character and fine raconteur, proved the man with the alchemist’s touch. Continue reading...
