All the build-up to Sunday’s fixtures in the Premier League, as well as reaction from Saturday’s dramatic results And last but not least, Leeds snatched a one-nil win away to Forest. Another match with late drama to kick-off opening weekend. This time the excellently named Anton Stach doing the snatching/statching. It would be fascinating to know which algorithms or eagle-eyed staff in Ipswich’s recruitment department spotted the potential in Emersonn to score the goals to keep them in the Premier League . Thirteen games, no goals and a serious knee injury at the Brazilian side Athletico Paranaense; two league goals in 17 games at Turkish side Goztepe; then six in 28 at French side Toulouse. A modest return and not one that screams he would be ready to break down doors in the English top flight. Continue reading...
The Guardian FootballMateta’s Palace dispute deepens after losing appeals to end contract early
Striker wants move and said final year of deal was invalid 29-year-old took his case to tribunal and Fifa but lost Jean-Philippe Mateta is in dispute with Crystal Palace over the final year of his contract but failed in an attempt to have it ruled invalid by an independent Premier League tribunal and Fifa. The France striker signed a four-and-a-half-year contract when he joined permanently from Mainz in January 2022 after an initial loan, in a deal that also included the option of a 12-month extension. That was activated by Palace in 2024, with Mateta’s contract now due to expire at the end of this season. But it is understood the 29-year-old and his representatives have disputed whether that extension was valid and took the case to an independent tribunal under Premier League regulations last season. Official confirmation of the outcome has not been disclosed, although Palace insist Mateta’s contract remains binding and he played in their defeat at Everton on Saturday. Fifa also rejected his claim after ruling it did not have jurisdiction over the dispute. Mateta’s representative has been approached for comment. Continue reading...

The Guardian FootballJosé Mourinho marks Real Madrid return with late drama and touch of humility
The old master is back at Madrid as he begins with celebrations, frustrations and relief in a 2-1 win at Espanyol José Mourinho says he is calmer now so when the rest of the bench emptied, sprinting down the touchline to celebrate the 90th-minute goal that finally delivered victory on his first game in charge of Real Madrid in 4,380 days, he did not set off with them. Instead, he clenched his fists, got to his feet and walked down the touchline behind the subs, watching them head, shouting, towards Carlos Espí. As they piled on down in the corner, he pulled over his captain Fede Valverde for a word. Which might just have been: phew . For all those stars; for all that Mourinho’s main task might just have been to find a way to fit Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior and Jude Bellingham together; for all that he had introduced Yan Diomande, the most expensive player in the club’s history , it was a 21-year-old, unknown six months ago and unexpectedly signed from Levante, who got the goal that secured victory upon the coach’s second coming. The Guardian FootballMeet the new Spurs, same as the old Spurs despite big summer spending | Billy Munday
Canny Brentford show it will take more than a few new players to restore any sense of stability to Tottenham This was supposed to be New Spurs . Daniel Levy, such a magnet for fan antipathy, has been sidelined. Roberto De Zerbi’s recruitment drive has won the transfer market. The stadium is still nice. But Spurs and ambition were always an awkward combination and all those cash-fuelled dreams were shattered within an hour of the new season. A few headed for the exits after Brentford’s third goal on 49 minutes. There were not many left by the time those in freakish purple made their way over to that corner of the Gtech at full time. There was no escaping the irony that the best player on the splendid opening-day pitch was the only new face in Brentford’s starting XI. Mamadou Sangaré, signed for a club-record fee from Lens , made sure his Premier League debut was played at his pace – faster and more dynamic than any of Sandro Tonali, Lucas Bergvall or Conor Gallagher could deal with in midfield. The Mali international ran off Bergvall to set up Keane Lewis-Potter’s first and struck the shot that led to Michael Kayode’s third. Continue reading...
