ESPNIn-the-dark Kane trying not to 'stress' over Monday's Ballon d'Or reveal
Bayern striker Harry Kane said he would prefer to know ahead of time whether he has won the Ballon D'Or, adding he is still in the dark over Monday's decision.
The Guardian — Champions LeagueBayern Munich 2-2 Arsenal: Champions League – as it happened
Declan Rice struck to earn Arsenal a point after Harry Kane scored from the spot, but Bukayo Saka’s early injury will be a concern The teams are out! Bayern are in one of their all-red phases, while Arsenal are harking back to the early 90s with a blue version of the famous bruised banana. Vincent Kompany is in the house, by the way, having recovered from a virus that threatened to keep him in bed. And so is Germany boss Jurgen Klopp, in the stands flashing that smile and throwing his arm around the shoulder of another erstwhile Liverpool manager, Rafael Benitez. Everyone having a good time, it seems, and looking forward to this big showdown, including Arsenal fan Charles Antaki … well, kind of: “Pretty dismal, the fare served up in the game against Forest. But! Pundits have assured us that because Bayern are going to be on the attack, Arsenal will be free to entertain us with a dazzling display of skill, ambition, irresistible cheeks and above all, goals. Not much to say about that except We Shall See.” We’ll be off in a minute or two. Mikel Arteta speaks to TNT Sports. “We’re gonna have to play, I expect, three or four different games at different stages … we need everybody ready because we need to change and adapt to that … freshness … very excited … we have talked about our enthusiasm for playing on these big stages … that’s where you want to get tested … play with a lot of courage … a lot of aggression … be decisive … we have prepared for what we have to do.” Continue reading...
The Guardian FootballManchester City have been a joy to watch but they became detached from their roots | Philipp Lahm
City behaved much like other top clubs but their rule-breaking deserves to be punished. The Bundesliga, where members have a controlling stake, can show the way forward Do we have to reassess Manchester City now? In my columns, I have repeatedly engaged with this club and its key figures. Looking back at what I have written over the years, I believe it remains beyond question that the team have achieved greatness. I always loved watching them: they were a true unit on the pitch, a finely tuned orchestra. I would also write all over again that the conductor, Pep Guardiola, masters his craft like few others. I could recognise his teams even if they were wearing the wrong shirts and the game was broadcast in black and white – by the passes, the distances between the players and the intelligence of their interplay. It is no wonder Guardiola inspires others to become managers; look at Vincent Kompany, Mikel Arteta, Enzo Maresca, and perhaps some time Ilkay Gündogan and Rodri. Continue reading...

The Guardian FootballDoes anyone feature on more than two clubs' all-time top-10 scoring charts? | The Knowledge
Plus: the longest kit supply partnerships, more own goals (part II) and consecutive goalless draws Mail us with all of your questions and answers “Harry Kane is now Bayern’s seventh-highest scorer of all time, as well as being Tottenham’s highest scorer. The man he overtook at the top of that list, Jimmy Greaves, is also Chelsea’s seventh-highest scorer of all time. Do any other players feature on two (or more) clubs’ all-time top- 10 scoring charts?” asks Owen Powell. A trawl through the Knowledge archive reminded us that we have previously looked at players who are the record goalscorer for more than one club . This question is slightly different, as we’re focusing on goalscorers who are in the all-time top 10 for the most different clubs. There are dozens of players who appear for two clubs, including Sergio Ag üero (Atlético Madrid and Manchester City), Kenny Dalglish (Celtic and Liverpool), Jimmy Greaves (Chelsea and Tottenham) , Lionel Messi (Barcelona and Inter Miami), Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid and Al-Nassr) and Alan Shearer (Blackburn and Newcastle). The Guardian FootballMac Allister double sparks Liverpool’s thrilling comeback win over Villarreal
Andoni Iraola and Iñigo Pérez parked a long and close friendship in the buildup to their first competitive confrontation as coaches. The old Athletic Bilbao teammates will have a humdinger of a Champions League contest to dissect once communications are restored. Liverpool, ignited by Rio Ngumoha, recovered from two goals down against Villarreal to maintain their 100% record plus their gathering momentum. Alexis Mac Allister struck twice, Florian Wirtz capped recent improvement with his first goal of the season while Liverpool were dreadful for the opening 30 minutes, transformed after the break and fretting in stoppage time after Tani Oluwaseyi had volleyed in a third for Villarreal. The game flipped on Sergi Cardona’s mistake and Ronald Araújo’s equaliser with the final touch of the first half. “We weren’t able to handle the emotion tonight,” conceded Villarreal coach Pérez. The Guardian FootballArsenal’s David Raya hits back at ‘boring’ label as Arteta defends side’s style of play
Goalkeeper brushes off criticism before Bayern clash Kompany could miss game with virus affecting his legs David Raya says he does not care if rival supporters call Arsenal “boring” as his manager, Mikel Arteta, insisted that critics of the team’s style were only a “very small minority”. Arsenal made it 10 wins out of 11 in all competitions for the season when they beat Nottingham Forest 1-0 at the City Ground on Sunday. But it was a day when Noni Madueke’s late goal papered over a flat and one-paced performance.
