Denmark dominate Wales in Nations League to leave Bellamy ‘really hurting’

Wales wilted in Copenhagen as a 2-0 defeat to Denmark left them bottom of their Nations League group with no points or goals from their first two games. After a first half in which Wales were very much second-best and fortunate to reach the break level, Denmark’s domination was rewarded by a Ben Davies own goal and a Gustav Isaksen strike in the second period. Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo reflects on ‘tough summer … in football and life’

Gakpo’s second son died during pregnancy in June Dutch winger almost left Anfield for Manchester City Cody Gakpo has reflected on a “very tough” summer that ended with the collapse of a transfer to Manchester City, revealing Liverpool changed their minds about letting him join their top-flight rivals. The forward scored a superb stoppage-time equaliser to earn the Netherlands a 1-1 draw in Thursday’s Nations League game against Germany, who are coached by his former club manager Jürgen Klopp. It continues a bright start to the season for Gakpo, who was an £80m target for City in August before talks stalled. Earlier in the summer he was struck by tragedy, announcing with his partner, Noa van der Bij, that their second son had died during pregnancy. Continue reading...

Gakpo denies Klopp perfect start as Xavi’s Netherlands rescue draw against Germany

At least Germany can be sure it will not be dull. Jürgen Klopp had predicted his debut as head coach could be wild, a trait he would accept as long as his team were lively enough. Both transpired in a frayed, pinball-like game whose lack of quality could be forgiven on account of its entertainment levels. The Netherlands more than merited a brilliant late equaliser from Cody Gakpo and by the time those present had drawn breath it felt appropriate that, for all the talk of new dawns, everyone finished back where they had started. World domination is a far-off prospect for both of these flailing giants on such scrappy, frenetic evidence. But at least those with a stake in this famous old fixture, largely shorn of the spite and spit that defined it of old, could come away feeling something. Restoring those essential sensations of joy, pain and meaning sits at the very top of Klopp’s priorities. Germany looked raw and scattergun for long periods, reined in only by their lack of technical aptitude, but there were signs of an energy that had long been missing. Continue reading...

Another set of Sullivan brothers are making football waves in Bangladesh

While Cavan and Quinn Sullivan star in MLS with the Philadelphia Union, brothers Ronan and Declan have connected with their South Asian heritage Ronan Sullivan had tried a panenka twice in his life. Both attempts were at practice on the other side of the world, and one hit the crossbar. But his twin brother, Declan, was hardly surprised when Ronan turned to him and told him he’d chip the fifth penalty of a shootout that could win a scoreless tournament final, as millions tuned in online to see his Bangladesh side play against India in the Under-20 South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Championship. “He didn’t even need to say it. I knew he was gonna do that the whole time,” Declan remembered, sitting next to his brother on the couch of their dorm room at Saint Joseph’s University. “I knew that if he got the last pen to win it, he was gonna do that. That’s just the him thing to do.” Continue reading...

End of an era? South Korea’s sun sets in the Premier League but Japan rise

After glory days of Park Ji-sung and Son Heung-min, the new season could be Korean-free for first time since 2005 It has been a cruel summer for South Korea. The national team crashed and burned at the World Cup, the police are investigating the football association, reports have emerged about bribes paid to foreign referees in 2011 and 2012 and there is a real prospect of the English Premier League being Korean-free for the first time since 2005. That was when Park Ji-sung signed for Manchester United, to start a love affair between the Land of the Morning Calm and England’s top tier that has continued ever since. Park won four titles and his mantle was taken over in 2015 by Son Heung-min at Spurs. Continue reading...
