The Guardian FootballManchester United crisis deepens with Chelsea defeat and Martínez red card
Get ready for another week of agonising over the sorry state of Manchester United. The legends of old will rage on podcasts, clips of a fuming Gary Neville will fly around social media and by the time United play again there is every chance a new manager will be in the dugout. There were echoes of Erik ten Hag’s final game in charge as the walls closed in on Michael Carrick here on Saturday. United missed chances at 0-0, just as they did when Ten Hag lost to West Ham a day before his sacking two years ago , and Chelsea exacted punishment after initially delivering a performance so bad it had you worrying for the nascent Xabi Alonso project. The Guardian FootballArteta can take inspiration from George Graham to expunge painful Anfield memories
Arsenal have not won at Liverpool for 13 league games but Gunners’ win in 1989 remains one of club’s greatest nights Mikel Arteta used a Spanish word to describe what it felt like to be helpless at Anfield while playing for Everton in 2011: bajar . “It’s when a cyclist is going up and looks amazing, then in one kilometre he goes ‘boom’ and he’s struggling again,” he said in Amazon’s All or Nothing documentary. “The game was going well and then suddenly I could only see red shirts flying around. The game is passing all over me and I cannot react. I only had that feeling in my career once, and it was at Anfield.” Given Arteta’s record at Liverpool, Sunday’s showdown with his childhood friend Andoni Iraola – five days after Arsenal were dumped out of the Carabao Cup by Fleetwood – could be expected to fill him with dread. Arteta finally tasted victory there as a player with Arsenal in September 2012 , after five failed attempts in the Merseyside derby, but ended up spending the night in hospital with concussion after colliding with Jordan Henderson in an incident he has described as “the biggest fear of my life”. The Guardian FootballPremier League: 10 things to look out for this weekend
Bruno Fernandes owes Manchester United a performance, Mathys Tel has arrived at Spurs and Liverpool are improving Premier League top scorers Michael Carrick and Bruno Fernandes held clear-the-air talks this week. Fernandes was an unused substitute against Bournemouth after criticising Carrick’s tactics during the Champions League defeat at Como but it seems the situation has been resolved – for now. Dropping Fernandes did not do United any good against Bournemouth, who ran riot at Old Trafford , and the captain is expected to return to the starting lineup for the trip to Chelsea. If that happens, he owes Carrick a performance. Fernandes has been poor this season and it is time he did his talking on the pitch. The Guardian FootballEverton ease past Newcastle to set up Fleetwood trip after Grealish is dropped
The biggest night in Everton’s season started with a big call from David Moyes and demanded a big performance from his players. With the exception of Jack Grealish , they did not let him down. A quarter-final at Fleetwood Town is their prize after a clinical, committed display shattered Newcastle’s hopes of lifting the Carabao Cup for a second time in three seasons. Newcastle dominated spells of the fourth round tie and the stats – registering 28 shots to Everton’s 11, although only nine visiting attempts were on target – but individual defensive errors and an ineffective attack proved a ruinous combination. Matthias Jaissle denied his team are a soft touch, despite persuasive evidence to the contrary, yet called Newcastle “naive” and the defeat, in front of almost 8,000 of their fans, “shocking”. Andy Burnham was among the many Evertonians in attendance grateful for Newcastle’s generosity. Continue reading...
The Guardian FootballChelsea’s fine finishing has them flying high – but how long can it last?
Despite being at opposite ends of the table, according to Opta’s expected points model, Chelsea have performed worse than Saturday’s opponents Manchester United Michael Carrick will arrive at Stamford Bridge on Saturday with the air of a dead man walking. Yet despite Manchester United being fifth-bottom of the Premier League and Chelsea fifth-top, the Blues have performed worse this season according to Opta’s expected points model. Is there a glitch in the matrix? Has the fabled supercomputer clicked on a suspicious link? Even though the margin between their data is small, it feels unthinkable that Chelsea could be below United’s level. Continue reading...
The Guardian FootballRodman rule has been revised but the fight to keep stars in the NWSL goes on | Moving the Goalposts
Gone are the eight criteria to be a High Impact Player so clubs can spend their money on whomever they want – and the solution makes sense When Washington plays Chicago this Sunday in DC, “Rowdy Audi” will probably be full. It will also be full when the post-season starts, should they lock up their top-four position with a positive result on Decision Day. Equipped with an accessible stadium in a big city, a proud fanbase and a formidable roster rife with players qualifying for the High Impact Player (HIP) rule’s initial criteria (including Trinity Rodman, who gave the rule its moniker), the Spirit hold sway in the attendance charts. But starting next season, everyone on the Spirit will qualify for the “Rodman Rule” . So will every player in NWSL. Announced Friday, NWSL settled a grievance with the league’s Players Association, who argued that the initial criteria violated federal labor law. Continue reading...
The Guardian FootballTime and owners not on Moyes’ side as he tries to end Everton trophy drought
The Friedkin Group want to sell and squad investment has dried up but Carabao Cup is still an opportunity for silverware A European challenge plus a concerted effort to end a trophy drought that will soon stretch into a 32nd year were Everton’s stated aims for this season, although that was before the club’s owners turned the taps off in the transfer market and announced they were looking to sell up. An abrupt change of direction and ambition from The Friedkin Group (TFG) has not altered the demands on David Moyes, however. It is as you were for the Everton manager, regardless of the tools at his disposal. Newcastle’s visit to Hill Dickinson Stadium in the Carabao Cup fourth round on Thursday – when they will be backed by 7,732 fans after Everton allocated their opponents 15% of the ground – is timely on several counts. It is, first and foremost, an opportunity for Moyes’s team to advance in a competition that Everton have never won and edge closer to realising one stated aim for the campaign. It is also a chance to restore positivity after consecutive defeats against Chelsea and Arsenal , Everton’s only losses of the season. Continue reading...
The Guardian FootballLiverpool beat Chelsea on penalties yet again to secure Carabao Cup progress
Chelsea must have been resigned to their fate as soon as the shootout arrived at Anfield. Four times they had faced Liverpool on penalties previously and four times they had lost. Number five was confirmed when Wesley Fofana’s wild effort sailed high into the Kop and sent Andoni Iraola’s side into a Carabao Cup quarter-final against his old club Bournemouth. Fofana was not the only culprit as Chelsea’s catalogue of penalty misery against Liverpool gained a new chapter alongside the 2007 Champions League semi-final, the 2019 Uefa Super Cup final and the FA and League Cup finals of 2022.
