‘Everyone’s pumped up’: John Stones on the mentality helping England chase World Cup dream

The long-serving centre-back came off the bench to help 10-man England preserve their lead against Mexico, and feels the entire squad is laser-focused on reaching the final John Stones had to know the question was coming. With Mexico vanquished after one of the great England nights , the focus had turned in part to the quarter‑final against Norway in Miami on Saturday and some bloke up front with a ponytail. Stones knows Erling Haaland , having spent the past four seasons with him at Manchester City, but this was not a time for him to engage on the nitty-gritty of how to stop him. At one point, as Stones spoke at the Azteca stadium after England’s epic 3-2 win on Sunday , he claimed to have only just been told what side his team play next. Come on, John. Norway beat Brazil to advance well before England stepped out against Mexico. In many respects, it was classic laid‑back Stones, living only in the moment. The central defender did, of course, talk of his respect for Haaland and Norway. Continue reading...

Tuchel claims World Cup refereeing ‘not good enough’ but says England have belief to go all the way

Tuchel critical of ‘unreliable’ officiating against Mexico FA could launch appeal against Quansah’s red card Thomas Tuchel called the standard of refereeing at the World Cup unreliable and erratic as he insisted England are capable of going all the way following their dramatic 3-2 victory against Mexico. Tuchel fumed after his side held on with 10 men at the Azteca stadium on Sunday night, saying that officials across the board have not been up to scratch at the tournament. The German, who was unhappy with Jarell Quansah being sent off for a bad tackle after a review following a recommendation by the video assistant referee, claimed that players do not know what to expect during games and he warned that teams are at risk of being knocked out because of poor refereeing decisions. England rise to Azteca occasion and see off ghosts, time and Mexico | Barney Ronay

This was the most extraordinary night of football as an experience of the mind, body, bones, guts and blood “Enn-JOYYY this unforrrgGEDDABLE Fifa Worrrld Cup … expPERRIENCE!!” the strangely guileless American-accented public address had commanded, with 40 minutes still to run before the delayed kick-off in Mexico City. Er. OK then. Looking out over the mist-shrouded cliff face of the Estadio Azteca, drenched to the inner seams in generational rain, throbbing through the chest from the endless waves of noise, the word enjoy just didn’t seem to capture the basic sensory experience. Lionel Messi and football’s ageless wonders can excel into their 40s | Emma Hayes

Argentina’s captain leads the way for veteran strikers at World Cup. They have different styles, but all have shown their worth I would be shocked if the record for the most goals scored by a player in a World Cup – Just Fontaine’s 13 in 1958 – is not broken this summer. That is how elite the world’s top forwards are. They are all pushing each other to keep scoring more. We are so lucky to be watching them at the same time. I also believe, because of the skill set required to be a world-class, modern-day finisher, we are going to see more and more playing into their 40s, so much so that it may be possible that Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo could go to another World Cup. ‘Here to write our own chapters’: England not daunted by unique occasion of Mexico game, says Tuchel

‘Impossible’ to adapt to altitude but players coping, says coach Aguirre trying to keep El Tri ‘grounded’ before Azteca match Thomas Tuchel has admitted England are enduring a challenging adaptation in Mexico City but is convinced his team will be ready to “write our own chapters” when they face the World Cup co-hosts at Estadio Azteca. The last-16 match against Mexico in their fabled home ground is the most eagerly anticipated of this summer and its logistics have presented unusual problems. England must adapt to playing 2,240 metres above sea level at a venue where Mexico have not lost since 2013. They landed on Friday evening and found it difficult to hit their stride on Saturday afternoon in their final training session before the tie. Continue reading...
