Relive that here and now, one, two, three. Today’s match is officially being played behind closed doors. Croatia are being punished for crowd trouble during a Nations League quarter-final against France. However, football fans can’t take anything at face value these days , and this is no exception. Uefa rules allow an exception for kids up to the age of 14 from the local Rijeka area, and up to 6,000 plus guardians are expected to attend. Throw in the 100 England fans allowed in and the 8,200-seat stadium should be around two-thirds full. Continue reading...
The Guardian FootballDecline and fall: who will believe in Raheem Sterling now?
Former England winger could face a prison term next month and his career collapse raises many questions In another world, where careers broke in different directions, Raheem Sterling would be in this England squad now, playing for the manager, Thomas Tuchel, who made him the No 1 target of the new Chelsea era after the Todd Boehly-Clearlake Capital takeover. He is 16 months younger than Harry Kane, who continues to break records as England’s captain and hit a personal high of 73 goals last season. Sterling, meanwhile, is without a club and awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty at Basingstoke magistrates court to dangerous driving and possession of nitrous oxide after an incident that witnesses feared might kill someone. The Guardian FootballPickford in spotlight against Croatia with England position under threat from Trafford
Goalkeeper returns for Saturday’s Nations League match but is under pressure to respond with strength of competition growing For England’s first meeting with Luka Modric you have to go back 20 years. Croatia were managed by Slaven Bilic, who has returned for a second spell in charge of the national team, and dominated in Zagreb. They eased to a 2-0 win, Steve McClaren’s doomed attempt to qualify for Euro 2008 took a turn for the worse and, as well as Modric giving England’s midfield the runaround, the game was remembered best for a horror mistake from the Three Lions No 1. Paul Robinson must have wanted the ground to swallow him up when he kicked at thin air and let Gary Neville’s backpass bobble into the net. Robinson, his aura diminished, never really recovered. The goalkeeper made 10 more appearances but after another crucial error against Russia in October 2007, he never won another cap. Continue reading...

The Guardian FootballThe Socceroos were unrecognisable against Brazil as a ‘new golden generation’ takes shape | Joey Lynch
The exciting crop of young players is in part a product of Australia’s early World Cup qualification which allowed them to break in and step up Even before a ball was kicked in the Socceroos’ two-game series against Brazil, Tony Popovic was musing about the shift in demeanour he’d noticed among the players. Yes, it had only been three months since they last saw each other at the World Cup, but change, the coach felt, was afoot. And while that may not seem like sufficient time for a notable shift in mentality, it would be in keeping with a journey that began more than 12 months ago, when their World Cup qualification was sealed early. Because as well entrenched as the players may now feel in the squad and the public consciousness, it’s worth remembering that when Australia beat Saudi Arabia and punched their tickets to North America in June 2025, neither Nestory Irankunda nor Mohamed Touré were regular selections. Their true international breakouts came in the October friendlies against New Zealand. Paul Okon-Engstler, Patrick Beach, and Lucas Herrington had not made their debuts, while Cristian Volpato was still playing for Italy’s junior teams. Jacob Italiano was toiling in relative obscurity in Austria and Tete Yengi was known as “Kusini’s younger brother”. Continue reading...
