The Guardian FootballCroatia v England: Nations League football – live

Relive that here and now, one, two, three. Today’s match is officially being played behind closed doors. Croatia are being punished for crowd trouble during a Nations League quarter-final against France. However, football fans can’t take anything at face value these days , and this is no exception. Uefa rules allow an exception for kids up to the age of 14 from the local Rijeka area, and up to 6,000 plus guardians are expected to attend. Throw in the 100 England fans allowed in and the 8,200-seat stadium should be around two-thirds full. Continue reading...
The Guardian FootballPickford in spotlight against Croatia with England position under threat from Trafford
Goalkeeper returns for Saturday’s Nations League match but is under pressure to respond with strength of competition growing For England’s first meeting with Luka Modric you have to go back 20 years. Croatia were managed by Slaven Bilic, who has returned for a second spell in charge of the national team, and dominated in Zagreb. They eased to a 2-0 win, Steve McClaren’s doomed attempt to qualify for Euro 2008 took a turn for the worse and, as well as Modric giving England’s midfield the runaround, the game was remembered best for a horror mistake from the Three Lions No 1. Paul Robinson must have wanted the ground to swallow him up when he kicked at thin air and let Gary Neville’s backpass bobble into the net. Robinson, his aura diminished, never really recovered. The goalkeeper made 10 more appearances but after another crucial error against Russia in October 2007, he never won another cap. Continue reading...

The Guardian FootballJames Trafford’s England dream burns with No 1 spot finally up for grabs again
The Leeds player was surprise starter against Spain but, after his solid display, Jordan Pickford’s grip may be loosening James Trafford looks genuinely affronted. The Leeds goalkeeper’s reaction borders on incredulity. Was it a season of frustration for him at Manchester City last time out, he is asked? A wasted year? “I won two trophies,” he says very simply and very firmly. Defiance is the stock in trade of a goalkeeper and Trafford has a nice line in it, on and off the pitch. Thrust into the England lineup against Spain at Wembley on Saturday for only his third cap, he performed well, particularly during the opening 35 minutes when the world champions threatened to run riot. Trafford made two excellent saves that kept England in contention, laying the groundwork for their surge into a 2-1 half-time lead. They ended up losing 3-2 in the Nations League opener after Harry Kane missed a 54th-minute penalty for 3-1. Continue reading...

The Guardian FootballOyarzabal earns Spain Nations League win as England pay for Kane penalty miss
It was another high-profile game when Thomas Tuchel’s England let a lead slip in the second half and went on to lose. But unlike the last time, it was not one for recriminations. The England support can accept losing when their team plays with cut and thrust. More to the point, they can accept losing to Spain who, at times, played football from a different stratosphere. England were game. They were driven by Jude Bellingham, who ran on adrenaline and played to the point of maximum expression. They had positive surges either side of the interval, especially the one towards the end of the first half when goals from Anthony Gordon and Harry Kane put them in charge, hauling them back after Lamine Yamal’s second-minute goal. The Guardian Premier LeagueBrentford blitz Chelsea as Fábio Carvalho caps stunning second-half display
Those early-season thoughts that Chelsea might be the team best-placed to challenge Arsenal are beginning to look extremely over-optimistic. The two chaotic wins with which they began were always difficult to read: they might have been useful points picked up on the way to a more solid structure, or they might have represented evidence of significant problems. After three games without a win, and 12 goals conceded in five games this season, it’s beginning to look like the latter. At the final whistle, Keith Andrews tipped his head back and roared at the sky, celebrating Brentford’s first home win over Chelsea since 1938. They remain unbeaten, coherent and disciplined, and moved up to third in the table. The comparison is impossible not to draw: as one side flail in an orgy of structured spending, their far less wealthy neighbours thrive with a clear plan and sense of direction. “It was a performance I felt was bubbling,” said Andrews. “I could see it in the players’ eyes over the last two days. They were very focused, very determined.” Continue reading...

The Guardian FootballTrent Alexander-Arnold recalled by England but with a warning from Thomas Tuchel
Real Madrid player must help improve defensive solidity Scott, Hall, Lewis-Skelly and Calvert-Lewin selected Thomas Tuchel has told Trent Alexander-Arnold he must bring defensive solidity to the England squad after giving him a surprise recall for the upcoming Nations League matches. The head coach has selected the Real Madrid right-back only once before – for the games against Andorra and Senegal in June last year. Tuchel made headlines when he did so by urging Alexander-Arnold to focus on the defensive side of his game or risk a slip that could undermine the team’s World Cup campaign. Continue reading...
The Guardian Football‘Embrace the chaos’: Tuchel aims to harness England’s football culture
Head coach says he must accept lack of control in games ‘Deep down, English players … they go for it’ Thomas Tuchel has admitted there are times when he craves greater control in matches. But the England head coach feels the more chaotic, adrenaline-fuelled nature of the Premier League will remain his template as he targets glory at Euro 2028. Tuchel described his team as “maybe not the most economical to play football” in terms of their habit of constantly playing at full throttle. They lost to Argentina in the World Cup semi-final in July when they had nothing left in the tank and watched the game slip away after going 1-0 up in the 55th minute. England barely touched the ball thereafter, had no control and were reeled in, Argentina winning with two late goals. Continue reading...

The Guardian FootballTuchel should listen to ‘the 0.1%’ and learn from England’s World Cup mistakes | Jacob Steinberg
Head coach is keen to focus on positives but Nations League squad hints at desire for greater tactical options Thomas Tuchel should be listening to the 0.1%. As he unveiled his first England squad since the World Cup, he said 99.9% of supporters he bumped into did not talk about his substitutions during the Argentina game. According to him, the conversation is far more positive. Memories are shared of the knockout wins over Mexico and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It seems those who want to take the England head coach to task over the retreat in the semi-final in Atlanta are in the minority. This is, of course, hard to quantify. Is it really 99.9%? We can take Tuchel at face value, but relying on anecdotal evidence goes two ways. A lot of fans are not ready to move on yet. The national mood is far more downbeat than Tuchel imagines and he is kidding himself if he thinks people have forgiven the way England folded after going 1-0 up against Argentina early in the second half. Continue reading...
