The Guardian FootballMexico end World Cup knockout drought with last-32 win over Ecuador in Azteca cauldron
They were held up by an electric storm but, after the skies had cleared, Mexico kept the lightning bolts coming. This was a climactic night that utterly engulfed the senses and its ramifications will be far reaching. El Tri have broken a hex that had nagged and gnawed at the nation’s football psyche across four decades, winning a World Cup knockout game for the first time since 1986, and the head turner will be the manner in which it happened. Javier Aguirre’s players cut Ecuador apart in a stunning first-half performance and, on this evidence, woe betide whoever runs into them next. Continue reading...

The shadow of Iceland 2016 is all the warning England should need not to take for granted a winnable-looking first knockout game of the tournament It was the 10th anniversary last Saturday of the Iceland debacle . Kolbeinn Sigthórsson’s winner sliding underneath Joe Hart’s dive, Wayne Rooney chugging away in midfield, Harry Kane taking corners, and Roy Hodgson being forced to conduct a sullen farewell press conference. It all feels like something from a fever dream but no, it did happen and that really was the state England were in when their Euro 2016 campaign came to an end. Expectations could not have been lower before Gareth Southgate banished the fear. England had to take small steps before becoming contenders again, to the extent that beating Colombia on penalties in the last 16 of the 2018 World Cup and winning a knockout tie for the first time in 12 years was an achievement. The Guardian FootballIran hit out at ‘lies and mistreatment’ following US official’s joy at team’s exit
Iran responds to US homeland security secretary comments ‘I was so happy when we said they could leave US soil’ Iran’s football federation has responded to a senior US official celebrating their exit from the World Cup by accusing the co-hosts of peddling “lies”, saying they are “used to mistreatment”. On Monday, the US homeland security secretary, Markwayne Mullin said he performed a “happy dance” and “sung a song or two” after Iran failed to qualify for the last 32. Mullin, speaking at a briefing at the government’s special event coordination centre in Washington, said: “I’m just glad they’re [Iran] done, and they’re not coming back. “I was so happy when we were able to pull their visas and said they could leave the US soil, and I might’ve sung a song or two or maybe even danced a happy dance. I’m very happy they’re going back because there wasn’t a single team that we dealt with more than them.” Iran’s head coach, Amir Ghalenoei, argued his team were the “most oppressed” at the tournament in his first press conference and, after their final Group G match in Seattle, Iran’s captain, Mehdi Taremi, intimated the US would rather Iran not advance to the knockout stage. “We have to fight against everything here,” Taremi said after last Friday’s draw against Egypt. “I don’t know if people want it or not, but as we see it by our perspective, yeah, they are like that I think.” Ghalenoei said on numerous occasions that the treatment of his staff and players was unfair. Eleven of Iran’s wider team, including the Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran (FFIRI) president, Mehdi Taj, were denied visas by the US authorities. They were also angry about their travel arrangements imposed by the US. On the eve of the tournament they were forced to move their training base, relocating from Arizona to Tijuana, Mexico. Responding to Mullin’s comments, a spokesperson for the FFIRI said: “Iranians are used to the mistreatment and lies of US officials, so no one in Iran is surprised by these hostile remarks. These remarks once again demonstrate that US officials have no commitment to international law or the principles expected of a host nation capable of organising a global sporting event. The Guardian FootballPanenka to Paraguay: Germany’s 50-year penalty shootout streak is over
Germany once scored 22 consecutive penalties in major tournament shootouts. They missed three as Paraguay won 4-3 from the spot Germany were knocked out of the 2026 World Cup on penalties, an outcome that feels unbelievable to anyone who has watched international football over the past 50 years. Paraguay beat them 4-3 in a shootout in Boston on Monday after their last-32 clash ended 1-1 following extra time. Germany had won six consecutive shootouts in all competitions before this, their only previous defeat occurring in 1976. The Guardian FootballMexico face up to their most terrifying opponent: the ghost of World Cup game four
El Tri have made a habit of qualifying from the group stage and then falling at the first hurdle. They are hoping the memory of 1986 will help end the curse In Mexico, the phrase ya merito (“almost there”) is closely linked to the country’s men’s football team. In Mexican Spanish, it’s a colloquial, almost affectionate expression; a way of describing something that’s close enough to touch, but that can never quite be reached. Now the phrase seems to capture something more profound about Mexico’s national team – shorthand for El Tri’s habit of not exactly failing, but always just falling short. Continue reading...
