BBC SportWho do Scotland fans want as the next head coach?
The speculation has started, but who do Scotland fans want to replace Steve Clarke?
The Guardian FootballSmall-minded SFA must ditch parochial mentality if Scotland are to thrive | Ewan Murray
Search for Steve Clarke’s replacement must look outside the country’s borders to avoid future World Cup disappointment There was one element of the Scottish Football Association’s otherwise baffling decision to give Steve Clarke a four‑year deal weeks before a World Cup ball had been kicked that made sense. When assessing alternatives to Clarke as the Scotland manager, it is apparent that paucity of talent among the country’s footballers is replicated in the coaching ranks. Clarke’s sudden resignation places the SFA in a position it was not only desperate to avoid but requires something it typically lacks; out‑of‑the-box thinking. Clarke has spared himself and his paymasters an acrimonious, lengthy goodbye while placing them in precisely the quandary they thought they had seen off. Continue reading...

He promises to do these things, walks and talks like he might do them. But then he also does them, which seems important. With England paddling here, he had the will and the craft to take out the spoons and rattle something off on his knee just when they needed it most. Continue reading...

The Guardian FootballColombia take top spot over Portugal after draw in battle of World Cup heavyweights
While wonderful and typical theatre, it was plainly ridiculous. “I’m back!” roared Cristiano Ronaldo, as if playing a key part in Portugal’s dismissal of Uzbekistan was in any way significant. Ronaldo toiled against DR Congo and was comfortably kept quiet here by Colombia. The stars have turned up at this World Cup. Ronaldo, though, still has a way to go if seeking to prove his omnipresence at this tournament will not hinder Portuguese hopes of glory. Nobody other than Father Time has chased down Ronaldo. An alternative quote, from Trainspotting, feels more apposite than what the 41-year-old bawled into a camera as Uzbekistan were swatted aside. “Well, at one time, you’ve got it, then you lose it, and it’s gone for ever,” observed Sick Boy in an Edinburgh park. Add Ronaldo to a list that, as per the film scene, includes David Bowie, Lou Reed, Charlie Nicholas and Malcolm McLaren. Eclectic company. Ronaldo actually wants to be in the same discussion as Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland. He once was. Now? It is a tricky point to enforce. Continue reading...

The Guardian FootballSteve Clarke resigns as Scotland head coach after elimination from World Cup 2026
Clarke goes weeks after signing new four-year contract ‘Thanks for having me and good luck to my successor’ Steve Clarke has resigned as Scotland’s head coach, with the decision announced within an hour of confirmation the country had been eliminated from the World Cup . Clarke, who had been in post since 2019, signed a four-year contract extension shortly before the tournament. The manner of Scotland’s exit has led to a sharp rethink from the 62-year-old. History will treat Clarke very favourably as a Scotland manager. After an absence from major tournaments stretching back to 1998, the team reached the 2021 and 2024 European Championships under him. This World Cup was a first for Scotland in 28 years. Continue reading...
