The Guardian FootballLiverpool start Iraola era in style to beat Sunderland but Gomez injury deepens defensive worries
Liverpool defeat Sunderland 4-2 in friendly in Nashville Gomez’s early injury leaves two teenagers in central defence The Andoni Iraola era at Liverpool opened with victory over Sunderland in Nashville – and a deepening of concerns over the defensive options at his disposal. The sight of Joe Gomez hobbling off after 10 minutes of the new head coach’s first game and two teenagers forming a raw partnership in the centre of defence in his absence intensified the spotlight on a department in need of work. Liverpool had few issues at the other end of the pitch against Régis Le Bris’s side, who were resplendent in pink in Tennessee, where second-half finishes from Dominik Szoboszlai, Federico Chiesa and Lewis Koumas delivered an ultimately comfortable win. The Guardian FootballDon’t like the result? Don’t worry, sport no longer ends on the field of play | Jonathan Liew
From the wrong headset in an F2 garage to Fifa overturning a red card, we are in a landscape where fairness is the enemy A funny and very small thing happened at the Formula Two race at Spa on Sunday. Noel León, of Campos Racing, carved his way through the field to finish seventh, earning himself six points in the drivers’ championship, and promptly left the circuit to go and do whatever it is Noel León likes to do after a race. Take a nap, hit the Belgian brews, congratulate himself on his palindromic name – whatever. Anyway, while he was doing that, more than three hours after the chequered flag, the FIA governing body called a meeting and decided to disqualify him. The reason: a serious breach of appendix 5 and article 21.5 of the F2 Sporting Regulations – and assuming you don’t have those to hand, it’s the rule governing the use of headsets. During the race, a guest of León had been spotted in the Campos garage wearing what was deemed the wrong type of headset. According to the aforementioned appendix 5, only listening devices may be used by non-team personnel. This headset had a microphone, albeit upturned and unused. Continue reading...

The Guardian FootballNew faces, gulfs in class and flawed drama: how 48 teams changed the World Cup
The first 48-team World Cup had its positives and negatives – do we need to brace for a 64-team future? It was less than 12 months after Gianni Infantino succeeded Sepp Blatter as president that Fifa announced the expansion of the men’s World Cup from 32 to 48 teams. The reaction was mixed. Diego Maradona said he was “delighted by Gianni’s initiative” because it allowed each country to dream of reaching the tournament, renewing their passion for football. Joachim Löw, then in charge of the world champions Germany, said: “I don’t think it’s a good idea to dilute the sporting value … In the long term, the quality suffers.” On the evidence of the first 48-team edition, won by Spain after 104 games across five-and-a-half weeks in North America, it’s fair to conclude Maradona and Löw both had a point.
