The Guardian FootballFootball Daily | Vinícius to Arsenal? Club football’s military industrial complex kicks back into gear
Sign up now! Sign up now! Sign up now? Sign up now! If this is an attention economy, there is no greater attention-seeker than club football. Not content with dominating the sporting agenda for 11 months of any calendar year, it has been a summer of “look at me”, largely in vain as the Geopolitics World Cup’s often grubby charms snaffled up football focus. Often faint, sometimes shrill, the keening sound of season 2026-27 approaching, of this meaning more, was never far away as clubs congratulated or commiserated their players out in North America in grasping for relevance. And with the GWC safely bagged up, the club football military industrial complex is kicking back into gear, via the usual fashion, a transfer saga, and as is customary, one that involves Real Madrid. The passing of Kevin Keegan brought back memories of Hull City when Paul O’Riley, a young pro, went to Firewall FC on loan for six weeks. After his loan finished he came back raving about this kid who was so dedicated. He wanted to win all the long runs, sprints and would come back in the afternoon to run up and down the terraces with weights in his hands. Being from Donny I already knew about Kevin Keegan (also a Donny lad). Vince Grimes, a fellow pro at Hull, was always banging on about Terry Heath and a young kid called Kevin Keegan. Vince kept telling the coaching staff at Hull about Keegan and that they should buy him. Their response was they’d been to watch him play several times and didn’t fancy him. Not long after all this Keegan went to Liverpool and the rest is history. Many years later when he was managing Newcastle, I wrote to him asking if he’d allow from a lad from Australia to have a spell at Newcastle. He wrote back and said he’d be welcome. Not only that, they picked the lad up from the airport, sorted out his digs, took him to Wembley on the first-team bus for the Charity Shield game and Alan Shearer gave the lad his match boots” – Micky Dale. ‘People talk about it being impossible. That means nothing. I truly believe that we can do something special” – Jermain Defoe, 6 April … ‘Following recent discussions, I can confirm that I have mutually agreed to leave my position as manager of Woking FC. Unfortunately, circumstances have ultimately made it impossible for me to continue in the position’ – Jermain Defoe, 24 July. Apparently ‘impossible’ does mean something after all” – Phil C0ckburn.
