The Guardian FootballNewcastle’s Matthias Jaissle looks on bright side despite lacklustre Leverkusen defeat
In spite of a 2-1 loss to Bayer Leverkusen, the new head coach at St James’ Park showed signs he is on the right path, and is closing in on Benfica’s Amar Dedic Reasons to be fearful or cause to be cheerful? Newcastle fans among a crowd in excess of 39,000 at St James’ Park on Saturday had much to debate as they headed home from a slightly underwhelming 2-1 friendly defeat by Bayer Leverkusen. The Guardian FootballCommunity Shield offers insight into Arsenal’s desire and Maresca’s Manchester City impact | Jonathan Wilson
Wembley curtain-raiser can offer clues but it is no reliable pointer to a season – its winners have not landed the title since 2018 The doubt for anyone when a long-strived-for goal has been achieved is hunger. There are unknowns and uncertainty everywhere, even at Arsenal. Mikel Arteta may be the longest-serving manager in the league but there are questions even there; it would be no great surprise if Arsenal were to start slowly. Continue reading...
