The Guardian FootballMikel Oyarzabal at the double as Spain beat Austria and cruise into last 16
The group stage is something you have to do but the World Cup starts here, Lamine Yamal had insisted, and down on the Pacific that was how it played out. It wasn’t just that Spain defeated Austria to reach the last 16 against Portugal or Croatia, their first victory at the knockout stage since they were champions in 2010; it was that on an enjoyable sunny afternoon they were Spain again. Two goals from Mikel Oyarzabal and another from Pedro Porro completed a 3-0 win that was as recognisably theirs as their coach had requested beforehand. “Almost perfect,” Luis de la Fuente called it afterwards. For the fourth consecutive game Spain kept a clean sheet, Unai Simón breaking Iker Casillas’s 2010 title-winning record while Pau Cubarsí and Aymeric Laporte confirmed their status as the centre-back partnership of the tournament so far, but what really stood out was what was happening either side and in front of them. The Guardian FootballMaddy Cusack was fearful of reporting her concerns, mother tells inquest
Sheffield Utd player ‘felt she couldn’t speak’ to hierarchy Coroner told of serious loss of club’s medical data The mother of Maddy Cusack told an inquest it is too difficult for women footballers to report grievances, for fear of being blacklisted, and said her daughter would still be alive if “her nemesis” Jonathan Morgan had not been appointed as Sheffield United’s manager. Deborah Cusack said Morgan, who is scheduled to give evidence at Cusack’s inquest on Monday, made her daughter “feel as if she had to give up football”, prior to her being found dead at the family’s home in Derbyshire on 20 September 2023. Thursday’s hearing also heard there had been an “industrial-scale” loss of players’ sensitive medical data involving the records-keeping system used for women’s footballers at multiple clubs, including missing records for Cusack. The club’s doctor at the time, Subhashis Basu, admitted that he had failed to adequately report the data breach. In the UK and Ireland, Samaritans can be contacted on freephone 116 123. The Guardian FootballAzteca avengers? England return to scene of infamous Maradona handball
Mexico have a formidable record in their iconic stadium but for many it will always be associated with one player As soon as the World Cup draw was completed in Washington DC last December, the date went into the diary, circled in bold by every England fan that hoped to travel, and millions more who knew they would not. Sunday 5 July, Mexico City. If everything went to plan and Thomas Tuchel’s team topped Group L and won their last-32 tie, they would be going to the Azteca Stadium for the last 16. There was another element in play. If Mexico won their group and advanced in the last 32, they would provide the opposition. Just imagine. England to play a critical knockout tie against one of the host nations in their back yard. It is a back yard where Mexico boast a fearsome record, where they feel close to invincible, owing in part to it being about 2,240 metres above sea level. The altitude can spin the heads of opposing players, burn their lungs. It does not affect Mexico. Continue reading...
The Guardian FootballThomas Tuchel claims Fifa rule puts England at ‘huge’ disadvantage in Mexico City altitude
FA’s preferred acclimatisation option ruled out Tuchel reveals Declan Rice came off ‘in terrible pain’ Thomas Tuchel says England will be at a “huge” disadvantage in the high altitude of Mexico City on Sunday when they face Mexico in the last 16 of the World Cup as he lamented a Fifa rule that has shut down one possible acclimatisation plan. The Football Association has looked into how the altitude will affect the England players and spoken to teams from other sports as part of its research. They included the British Olympic team. One of the findings is that if it is not possible to travel to the venue 10 days beforehand to get used to the conditions, then it would be preferable to go on the day of the game – arriving as close to kick-off as possible.
